Steve Porter - Porterhouse 2

EQ GREY

Published: 24-04-2007
Words: Dragos Rusu

Human beings express their creativity in different ways. Most of the times, they express it through art, which can be music, sculpture, painting, literature. In the electronic music, creativity can be expressed either through technique, or musical selection. Most of the time, it is recommended that both qualities be over posed and create a whole. Steve Porter chose firstly the musical selection on his latest mix compilation, but he also took in consideration the technique, which is perfect.
On his second Porterhouse installment, Porter featured no more and no less than 57 tracks split into two separated mixes.

On the first CD we find some of Porter’s own creations, but also productions of some old electronic music artists. Let’s just name Way Out West with its track Appolo, remixed by General Midi. Plump DJs are also present on this mix with Black Jack. But the ones which are very numerous on this compilation are Steve Porter and Chris Micali’s productions. Actually the surprise comes when we listen to Judge Jules andBK’s track, I Don’t Know. The mix is quick, the tracks change rapidly, and you don’t even have time to get used to the bass line, that you end up listening to something else. But all in all, the style is almost the same for the entire compilation: funny and full of life. Maybe it is trying to express as well as it can Porter’s personality.

The second mix is as good as the first one, with funky house, progressive house and tribal, but we also find some electro house. This second mix has 29 tracks, so an average of 1-2 minute per track. The longest track is one of Steve Porter’s, obviously, signed with the alias Agent 001. It is called Juicy Fruit and is very full of life and funky. The mix is quick, but in certain moments you can fill a slight rhythm decrease, but not very noticeable. We find tracks produced by Roger Lee, Matt Rowan, Mojado, Island 9, Emjae and many others.

Porter’s sound is one very similar to the one of Luke Fair and Desyn Massielo, but it always has something surprising. The idea of this mix is actually very similar with Magda’s idea, who last year released the compilation She’s a Dancing Machine, a 71-track selection at M_Nus Recordings.
